The October–December Gleadell barley pool will again deliver market-leading returns to pool members, both for those who have produced malting quality and for feed growers.
Farmers who commit to the pool have the benefit of their feed base price being marketed separately to the malting premium, whilst quality is assessed. Thereafter, tonnage can be allocated as malting barley with malting premiums being paid.
The feed barley pool price will top £155/t, while the malting barley price will exceed £182/t.
By comparison, the average price paid by Gleadell for spring malting barley in the open market prior to harvest 2018 for October/December movement was approximately £156/t ex farm.
The results rounded off an impressive set of barley pool results for the first half of the marketing season (see table).
The Gleadell pool offers farmers the opportunity to declare their produce as either feed or malting barley up to the point where quality has been assessed, samples have been drawn, and informed decisions can be made.
This is not the case with many competitor pools, where barley is committed and then marketed as either feed or malting quality, with no ability to switch between the two after the original commitment has been made. That risks hefty replacement charges being levied if malting quality is not achieved.
Gleadell managing director David Sheppard said: “In volatile markets and problematic growing seasons, this innovative marketing tool delivers significant benefits and risk avoidance to UK barley growers and is attracting significant commitment for harvest 2019.”
