Parentage: (Riband ‘sib' x Fresco) x Riband
Key Benefits
- Soft milling and very good biscuit quality – ideal for markets
at home and abroad
- Consistent yield and reliable quality
- Proven performance over many years and in difficult harvests
- Flexible rotational position
- Early/late drilling
- 1 st wheat after setaside
- The best choice for a 2 nd biscuit wheat
Agronomy
With its stiff straw, Consort is easy to grow and can exploit high
yielding situations for maximum yield. Consort tolerates take-all
infections well, making it the ideal choice for early drilling after
setaside, or as a 2 nd biscuit wheat where take-all can be a problem.
The graph below demonstrates biscuit wheat performance. Varieties
on or above the line perform consistently as a 2nd wheat. Those
below the line are less consistent as a 2nd wheat.
Consort is slow developing and can be drilled from early September
to the end of January. It has a long grain-fill period and slightly
later maturity, which maximises yield potential.

Disease resistance is generally good but crops should be monitored
for Septoria tritici and brown rust. Consort shows continued
resistance to both Brigadier and Equinox strains of yellow rust
and has good resistance to Fusarium ear blight.
Quality
Consort is a soft endosperm variety which is widely grown for biscuits,
cakes and breakfast cereal. Consort is also popular for export markets

Consort's good sprouting and shedding resistance ensure more reliable
quality in tough harvests.
Consort has high spirit yield making it an ideal choice for distilling
in Scotland.
