Winter Beans
Gleadell can offer both pale and black hilum winter bean varieties – very often backed with a buyback contract. Winter beans have grown in popularity as an alternative break crop within the farm rotations, very often giving reasonable returns.

Pale Hilum
Wizard - is a liked variety – it is favoured by farmers and end users. With 102% yield and shortest, stiffest strawed fully recommended variety it is likely to remain in the forefront. The variety has good disease resistance and produces samples that are suitable for both animal feed compounding and the Middle Eastern export market; this is due to the variety producing a large pale skin bean which is the choice of these end receivers.

Husky – is a new variety added to the PGRO recommended list in year 1 of provisional recommendation for 2010. The variety has the same yield as Wizard, and similar protein content. There is currently no information on disease resistance however the variety is medium tall and has medium early maturity. The variety has pale hilum which may allow for export potential.

Sultan – is a very short and stiff variety with early maturity, the variety is in year 2 of provisional recommendation on the PGRO list, and the variety has seen variable yield figures over the past couple of years, which has seen the current yield figure dropped to 99% of control. No disease resistance data is available at present for Ascochyta, however the pale hilum characteristics of the variety may allow for export potential. The variety is subject to a RAC agreement.

Black Hilum
Clipper – the variety has been in the market for a number of years (first listed is 1998) and has shown good performance on farm levels. The yield is now 4% below the best (Arthur) however Clipper has good resistance to Ascochyta, and due to its tall nature, may be a possibility against shorter varieties on light land situations the variety may establish a better canopy in dry seasons. A straight feed variety, as the variety lacks the pale hilum for export.

Arthur – a high yielding variety (103% of control – 4% ahead of Clipper) Arthur is a short variety with moderate standing power, and is medium early to mature. The variety scores a 9 for light leaf spot resistance (Ascochyta) which is very resistant. The variety is a straight feed variety, lacking the pale hilum for export. The variety is subject to a RAC agreement.
