Malting Barley
Cassata
Cassata has a specific recommendation for growers looking for barley of malting quality but also resistance to barley mosaic virus.  Cassata is 2% higher yielding than Pearl and has similar malting quality.  It is fully approved by IBD for the production of malt for brewing.  The variety has short stiff straw and has good resistance to Rhynchosporium. Pearl
Pearl is a widely used malting variety – favoured by both the farmer and the maltsters.  It has the lowest yield of the malting varieties on the recommended list however it has a good disease profile – and high specific weight. Click here for more information .

Purdey
Purdey is a newly recommended variety added to the CEL list this season (2010/11) – it has specific recommendation for the East region for growers wanting a variety with good yield – (99% treated yield – same as Flagon and 1% ahead of Cassata) and resistance to BaYMV.  The variety is currently under IBD evaluation.  The variety has good resistance to Rhynchosporium and net blotch but is susceptable to mildew. Winsome
Is another newly recommended variety added to the CEL list this season (2010/11) – the variety is the highest yielding variety on the CEL recommended list.  100% control – 4% ahead of Pearl.  This variety is under IBD evaluation.  It is an early maturing variety with good grain characteristics, aswell as a good all round agronomic package. Click here for more information .

2nd Row Feed

KWS Cassia
The highest yielding 2 row feed variety on the CEL recommended list.  KWS Cassia saw excellent demand for planting in autumn 2009 and this is sure to continue in autumn 2010.  With yield of 107% of treated control, this is 4% ahead of its predecessor Saffron and 11% ahead of the malting variety Pearl.  The variety has resistance to the most common strains of barley mosaic virus and has good grain characteristics and sound disease profile, the variety is however susceptable to Rhynchosporium. Retriever
Has the same yield as the 2 row feed variety KWS Cassia – it is 4% higher yielding than Saffron.  The variety has short stiff straw, with good resistance to Rhynchosporium and yellow rust – and resistance to Barley Yellow Mosaic virus, however tends to give moderate specific weights.

Saffron
4% lower yielding than KWS Cassia however it has a good tillering capacity has short, stiff straw and good disease resistance – Saffron has been a farmer favourite variety, the variety has a similar maturity to Pearl, the high tillering capacity gives the variety the ability to recover if late drilled or drilled into a poor seed bed.  The variety has a bold grain with good specific weight. Click here for more information .

Volume
A very high yielding six row hybrid variety – with yield at 112% of control – 5% ahead of the 2 row varieties Retriever and KWS Cassia.  Volume has good specific weights and also good resistance to Rhynchosporium and net blotch.  The variety also has excellent untreated yield – aswell as resistance to most common strains of BaYMV. Click here for more information .
