Hereward is moderately susceptible to mildew, yellow
rust, eyespot and Fusarium. Fungicide programmes should be tailored
accordingly.

Quality
Hereward is still the most consistent variety at meeting
breadmaking specifications and can attract good premiums.

Hereward has consistently outperformed Malacca in terms of specific
weight and % protein in harvest years 2002-2006 ( source:
HGCA Quality Surveys ). Resistance to sprouting is moderate:
persistent rainfall prior to harvest can push Hagberg values down.
It is therefore critical to ensure that harvesting Hereward takes
priority in catchy harvests and to consider pre-harvest glyphosate
treatment.
Contract growing schemes are available and further premiums may
be offered by some millers for Hereward's excellent quality.
