Extremely High Yield
Brompton was the top yielding stiff strawed variety in HGCA Recommended
trials in 2004 (108%) and 2005 (107%) and within 2% of the top in
2006.
Brompton is one of the highest yielding stiff strawed varieties
(106%) in the HGCA dry East region where 60 to 70% of the UK wheat
is grown.
Brompton is one of the highest yielding variety on heavy soils
(106%). It is an excellent first wheat (107%).
The above yields are from the HGCA Recommended List. If necessary
these trials are treated with chlorpyriphos to control orange blossom
midge. Brompton is the highest yielder in those trials as described
above, therefore there is no yield penalty from choosing Brompton
in situations where it is planned to use chemical to control midge
if the need arises.
Brompton is one of the highest yielding varieties for the popular
September and first week of October drillings (106%).
Proven Orange Blossom Midge resistance
Brompton has genetic resistance to orange blossom midge. This has
been proven by independant field trials, not only in 2004, but also
in the previous 2 years - 2002 and 2003 where nil or negligible
larvae numbers or damaged grains were seen.
No chemical control - with an environmentally sensitive LERAP chemical
- is necessary.
Yields of Brompton where midge are present and not controlled are
likely to be 20% or more above non-resistant varieties.
Jon Oakley, Principal Entomologist of ADAS, has recently said that
"we can safely say that more than half of the crops in 2004
were directly affected. Given the unpredictability of knowing which
crops need treatment, it is probably closer to 90% of the nation's
wheat crop on which wheat blossom midge would be an issue in variety
selection". This would include virtually all crops in both
the East and West regions of the UK.

General agronomy
Brompton should be grown according to the accepted good management
practises for high yielding feed varieties. Special attention is
needed for mildew control.
