Site & Rotation

Ashby has demonstrated itself to give very consistent yields and is very adaptable to a wide range of soils, climates and rotations.

Drilling dates

Ashby can be sown from mid October until mid-April.

Seed rate

Seed rates should be calculated, according to drilling date and soil type, to establish 250 plants per square metre.

Fertilisers

Nitrogen strategies should be tailored to achieve protein levels suitable for breadmaking. Nitrogen timings for a late autumn sown crop are likely to be 20% in March, 45-50% early April with the remainder in early May. Spring sown crops should receive roughly half their nitrogen at the two-leaf stage with the balance late April.

Growth regulators

Ashby responds well to the use of growth regulators especially when autumn sown. A routine application of chlormequat at early stem extension will normally be sufficient and additional growth regulators are unlikely to be required.

Herbicides

Initial tests show Ashby to be susceptible to chlorotoluron, which should not be used.

Fungicides

Ashby has good disease resistance but is very responsive to fungicides. A medium input fungicide programme can be applied to achieve the best performance.
